Three stock market dynamos have been rewarded for their financial savvy in a virtual investment competition run by Leeds Beckett University and investment management and stockbroking firm Redmayne Bentley.
Jack Gallagher, Harry Bowyer and Brad Strickland, collectively known as “Dynamic Investments”, were the winners of the Student Investment Club, a collaborative venture that saw 22 teams of students across the University’s business school invest £100,000 of virtual money in the stock market.
The competition involved around 90 people in total, who ‘traded’ by submitting buy and sell requests to Redmayne Bentley over a period of six weeks between October and December 2017. Compliance Officer Lucy Greenbank, herself a former Leeds Beckett student, said: “This gave people an introduction to stocks and shares.
“Those taking part invested in quite a variety of companies. Some of them focused on companies within the FTSE 100, while others looked at companies with trading announcements and news due to come out, and used those to make decisions on their investments.”
Investment Manager Phillip Wong and Trainee Compliance Officer Rachel Scarf, who graduated from Leeds Beckett last year, gave an initial lecture explaining the rules of the game.
Dynamic Investments made a total profit of £7,166.09.
Paul Houghton, Principal Lecturer at Leeds Beckett University, said: “Both for those students who are interested in pursuing a career in investment, or even for those who anticipate increasing salary levels in the future and the creation of more disposable income, the investment club provides beneficial experience.
