Leeds Beckett Students Outperform in Investment Initiative

An investment competition, which is a collaborative venture by Leeds Beckett University and ourselves, has seen winning Leeds Business School students Brad Elmer and Sam Hobbins generate a market-beating profit of almost 10%.

In its 12th year, the Student Investment Club competition saw 55 students from across the Leeds Business School take part, forming 20 Investment clubs each with £100,000 of virtual money to invest and manage in the stock market.

The winning team’s final portfolio was valued at £109,465.74, which was achieved from investment across multiple sectors in the five-week period of the competition.

Lois Hargreaves, Senior Lecturer, Leeds Beckett University said:
“The Investment Club provides students with an opportunity to develop commercial awareness and teamwork skills, whilst gaining an insight into investment management as a potential career path.

“Students clearly value this experience and, once again this year, many Leeds Beckett student teams have outperformed market benchmarks in challenging stock market conditions. Many thanks to Redmayne Bentley for their long-standing partnership and in offering this opportunity.”

Senior Compliance Officer and Leeds Beckett Alumni Rachel Scarf, who has been involved in the running of the competition for a number of years, said:
“The purpose of the competition is to provide a framework through which the students can gain insight and knowledge about stock market investment, including short-term market impacts and fluctuations.

“It was great to be back on campus to meet the students taking part face-to-face this year, having run the Student Investment Club virtually over the last couple of years. It is rewarding to be part of this initiative.”

At the end of May a celebration event took place at Leeds Beckett for the winning team. The event was attended by Lois Hargreaves, Professor George Lodorfos, Dean of the Business School, along with Rachel Scarf and Lawrence Fisher, Investment Management Department Manager.
