Redmayne Bentley hosts a “Focus on Finance” Day for sixth form students

Students from a Leeds college were invited to focus on financial services as part of a collaborative careers day in a bid to inspire them to consider careers in the sector.

A-level students from Elliott Hudson College met professionals at the Leeds Head Office of Investment Management and Stockbroking firm Redmayne Bentley, London-based market makers Winterflood Securities and professional body and educational charity, the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI), to learn about the origins of stocks and shares, the lifecycle of a trade on the Stock Exchange and the professional opportunities available to them in the world of finance.

Redmayne Bentley offers work experience and runs an established Apprenticeship scheme and if the event inspires students to seek out a career in the finance sector they will be encouraged to apply.

The day-long Focus on Finance event was the first of its kind at the firm, incorporating elements from across the industry to give students a holistic introduction to the world of finance. It was designed by Judith Ullock, Chartered FCSI, Learning and Development Manager at Redmayne Bentley, in conjunction with social value partner, Ahead Partnership, with support from colleagues at Winterflood Securities and the CISI, which also sponsored the event.

“We are always looking to attract the best talent with different experiences and backgrounds, and we are keen to open doors for young people. One of the main reasons I developed the programme was that I wanted to firstly give back to the community and give an opportunity to those school children from more diverse backgrounds to get into finance. The Focus on Finance Day is a great way to break down barriers to entry to financial services careers,” says Judith.

“We’re aware people don’t realise the variety of job opportunities available in the financial sector from marketing to accounts and share dealing. There might be a perception that the office is a bit like the film The Wolf of Wall Street with everybody wearing pinstripe suits - but it’s very different. We hope by inviting students into our workplace we can showcase our industry, dispel one or two myths and inspire the next generation of talent,” she added.

Tracy Vegro, CISI CEO said: “We are thrilled to be supporting this fantastic programme initiated by Judith and her team at Redmayne Bentley. The future of our sector is in the hands of the next generation. It’s important, therefore, that Elliott Hudson College Leeds students have the opportunity to understand that great careers can be built in our exciting financial services profession.”
