US open: Stocks edge up at open, boosted by crypto and tech gains

(Sharecast News) - Wall Street stocks were in the green at the open on Tuesday, as major indices looked set to attempt to recover from a soft start to December trading in the previous session. As of 1455 GMT, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was 0.24% higher at 47,400.51, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.37% to 6,838.10 and the Nasdaq Composite came out of the gate 0.79% firmer at 23,460.32.

The Dow opened 111.18 points higher on Tuesday, taking a bite out of losses recorded on Monday as tech stocks and cryptocurrency volatility weighed on sentiment.

Tuesday's early gains come after major indices snapped a five‑day winning streak on Monday as risk‑off sentiment continued to weigh. Concerns over sticky inflation, stretched valuations and returns on artificial intelligence investments saw tech heavyweights Alphabet, Palantir and Broadcom come under pressure and cryptocurrencies extend their slide, with bitcoin turning in its worst single day performance since March.

However, bitcoin rose roughly 2% early on Tuesday, while AI-linked names also supporting the broader market at the open, with the likes of Oracle, Broadcom and Nvidia all trading higher.

Looking ahead, traders remain hopeful of policy support, with markets now pricing an 87.6% chance of a Federal Reserve rate cut at the conclusion of its 10 December meeting.

On Tuesday's macro slate, Federal Reserve vice chair Michelle Bowman will deliver a speech at 1500 GMT.

No major corporate earnings were slated for release on Tuesday.
