US open: Stocks lower as traders look ahead to FOMC decision

(Sharecast News) - Major indices were in the red early on Tuesday as market participants looked ahead to the outcome of the Federal Open Markets Committee's two-day policy meeting. As of 1525 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.42% at 41,047.09, while the S&P 500 lost 0.51% to 5,621.33 and the Nasdaq Composite came out of the gate 0.75% weaker at 17,709.61.

The Dow opened 171.74 points lower on Tuesday, extending losses recorded in the previous session.

All eyes were firmly focused on the Fed early on Tuesday, with investors hoping to gain more insight into the central bank's thinking at its first policy meeting since Donald Trump announced his "reciprocal" tariffs at the start of April. Fed funds futures suggest just a 2.7% chance of the central bank cutting rates.

Also likely to draw some attention, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will testify before the House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday and could potentially provide insight into the "200 deals" that Trump claims to have struck with other countries, while the president himself was scheduled to meet with Canadian prime minister Mark Carney, marking the first meeting of the two leaders since Carney replaced Justin Trudeau in March.

On the macro front, the US trade deficit widened to a fresh record high of $140.5bn in March, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, wider than forecasts of $137.0bn. Imports jumped 4.4% to an all-time high of $419.0bn, while exports were up just 0.2%.

In the corporate space, DoorDash reported Q1 revenues and total orders that fell short of expectations.

Still to come, Advanced Micro Devices and Super Micro Computer will all report earnings on Tuesday.
