US open: Stocks fall at the bell as rising crude, tech declines hit sentiment
(Sharecast News) - Major indices were in the red early on Thursday as rising oil prices and a heavy earnings slate kept risk appetite subdued.
As of 1445 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.27% at 52,714.87, while the S&P 500 shed 0.86% to 7,690.42 and the Nasdaq Composite came out of the gate 1.51% weaker at 26,299.00.
The Dow opened 141.22 points lower on Thursday, taking a bite out of gains recorded in the previous session as chip and AI shares were bolstered by strong quarterly results and M&A speculation from SpaceX.
Meta was down 6.7% in early action despite posting a quarterly revenue beat and issuing strong guidance for the current quarter, while Tesla fell 1.75% even as it delivered better‑than‑expected third‑quarter earnings on both the top and bottom line.

The defence giant also reported a sharp 27% jump in backlog since Q2, setting a new record at $292bn.
Elsewhere, Spotify delivered strong third‑quarter growth, adding six million premium subscribers to reach 306m and boosting ad‑supported monthly active users by eleven million to 788m. Revenues climbed 16% to €4.97bn, driven by steady premium momentum and healthier ad‑supported performance, with the streaming giant saying it had met all key targets for the period.
Union Pacific posted a strong third quarter performance, with profits rising to $2.08bn from $1.79bn a year earlier and operating revenues climbing 15% to $7.2bn on continued volume growth, while Comcast also beat earnings expectations, delivering $1.07 per share versus the $0.98 consensus, although quarterly revenues slipped to $29.3bn from $31.2bn a year earlier.
Still to come, Western Digital will deliver its latest quarterly earnings after the close.
Energy prices were also weighing on sentiment, with Brent crude futures were up 3.26% at $112.37 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate futures were 2.78% higher at $99.85 per barrel.
