AstraZeneca shares slide on failure of cardiomyopathy trial

(Sharecast News) - AstraZeneca said on Thursday that the phase 3 CARDIO-TTRansform trial of Wainua in adults with transthyretin-mediated amyloid cardiomyopathy did not meet its primary endpoint, failing to show a statistically significant benefit against placebo on the composite measure of cardiovascular mortality and recurrent cardiovascular clinical events up to 140 weeks. The FTSE 100 company said Wainua was generally well tolerated, with a safety profile consistent with previous results.

AstraZeneca said the trial was conducted in patients receiving standard of care, with 57% of patients in each arm already on a stabiliser treatment at baseline and a further 24% starting one during the study.

Sharon Barr, executive vice president of biopharmaceuticals research and development, said that while the trial did not meet its primary objective, the results "support greater scientific understanding of treatment approaches" for patients with the progressive and often fatal condition.

At 0939 BST, shares in AstraZeneca were down 8.92% at 12,973.04p.
