US close: Dow tops 52,000 as Wall Street rallies on tech rebound, US-Iran pause
(Sharecast News) - Major indices traded higher on Monday, with the Dow Jones closing above 52,000 for the first time as technology shares rebounded after a difficult week, while investors monitored a pause in hostilities between the US and Iran that left questions over the durability of the agreement and the outlook for Middle East oil supplies.
At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.59% at 52,182.74, while the S&P 500 advanced 1.18% to 7,440.43 and the Nasdaq Composite saw out the session 2.07% firmer at 25,820.14.
The Dow closed 306.63 points higher on Monday after Washington and Tehran agreed on Sunday to halt attacks and allow commercial vessels to move freely through the Strait of Hormuz, following a weekend of military exchanges that threatened to derail efforts to end their conflict.
The US struck Iranian military sites over the weekend in response to Iranian attacks in the strait, with Donald Trump later warning of further action, saying "United States aircraft just struck Iranian missile and drone storage locations, and coastal radar sites, for violating the Cease Fire Agreement, AGAIN!"
Oil prices traded higher at the start of the week as traders assessed whether the pause would hold and ease supply‑risk concerns, with Brent up 1.13%% at $72.80 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate gained 2.2% to $70.75 a barrel.
Traders also kept a keen eye on the tech sector following last week's major swings, with Arm, Marvell, Micron Technology and Intel all trading higher. SpaceX also closed in the green after the satellite company announced it would be fast‑tracked into the Nasdaq 100 next month.
Elsewhere, Comcast rallied after announcing plans to spin off its media and technology operations into two separately listed companies, while Alphabet shot up almost 5% on its first day of trading as a Dow constituent.
On the macro front, the Dallas Federal Reserve said on Monday that Texas manufacturing activity was broadly unchanged in June, following a 0.4‑point increase in May. Firms reported a modest improvement in sentiment, with the company outlook index rising to 2.3 from 0.3, while uncertainty eased as the outlook uncertainty index fell eight points to 10.9.
Labour market conditions strengthened, with the employment index jumping to 13.9 from 0.2, while price pressures were mixed, as selling prices and wages accelerated, but input‑cost pressures held steady. Manufacturers remained optimistic about the months ahead as the future general business activity index rose 12 points to 25.9, although the future production index edged down slightly to 34.8.
