Trump sets 10-day ultimatum for Iran on nuclear deal

(Sharecast News) - US President Donald Trump gave a 10-day timeframe on whether he would strike a nuclear deal with Iran or launch a military attack on the Gulf state.

Trump was adamant that Iran could not have the capability to make a nuclear weapon. The US has built up significant forces in the region, sending oil prices higher amid fears of supply restrictions if Tehran shut down the Strait of Hormuz - a key waterway for global shipments of crude.

"It's proven to be over the years not easy to make a meaningful deal with Iran," Trump said overnight. "We have to make a meaningful deal, otherwise bad things happen."

"Maybe we're going to make a deal, but you're going to be finding out over the next probably 10 days," as the US waits for Iran to respond after talks between the two nations on Tuesday that ended without a clear resolution.

The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier is currently in the region. A second carrier and the world's largest warship, the USS Gerald Ford, is on its way. American missiles and aircraft struck three Iranian nuclear facilities in June last year.
