(Sharecast News) - Company insolvencies across England and Wales edged higher in January, according to figures out on Tuesday from HMRC, as the number of administrations jumped.
There were 1,744 company insolvencies last month, 4% higher than December but 14% lower than January 2025, according to the Insolvency Service and Companies House data.
Creditors' voluntary liquidations (CVLs) accounted for 1,323 of all insolvencies in January, up 1% month-on-month but 17% lower year-on-year, with December and January seeing the lowest monthly numbers of CVLs since July 2021.
The number of compulsory liquidations rose 4% over the month to 256, but were down 12% over last year, while company voluntary arrangements (CVAs) fell 13% to just 13%.
Administrations, however, surged 41% to 151, up 14% over last January, following an 8% decline over 2025 as a whole.
