EU car registrations climb as BEV sales continue to soar
(Sharecast News) - New car sales across the European Union were 2.1% higher than last year in November, helped by another surge in battery electric vehicle registrations, while the combined market share of combustion engine cars dropped to less than a third.
New car registrations totalled 887,491 last month, up from 868,910 in November 2024, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), taking the total number of new cars sold in 2024 to 1.4% higher than the previous year.
A total of 188,730 BEV cars were sold across the region in November, jumping 44.1% over last November, accounting for 21.3% of the total new car market, up from 15.1% the year before.
Hybrid electric cars remained the most popular choice, accounting for 301,819 sales and 34% of the market, with sales rising 4.2% over last year.
Meanwhile, plug-in hybrid electric sales were up 38.4% at 91,699, taking a 10.3% share of the market.
In contrast, petrol car sales were down 21.9% at 206,448, while diesel car sales slumped 23.2% to 70,120, with both categories combined accounting for just 31.2% of all new car registrations, down from a 40.9% share last November.
"Despite the recent positive momentum, overall volumes remain well below pre-pandemic levels," the ACEA said.
