US open: Dow slips, Nasdaq gains as Fed cut hopes linger

(Sharecast News) - Major indices began the week on uneven footing as market participants continued to look ahead to the conclusion of the Federal Reserve's two-day monetary policy meeting later in the week. As of 1445 GMT, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.19% at 47,864.51, while the S&P 500 ticked up 0.03% to 6,872.48 and the Nasdaq Composite came out of the gate 0.34% firmer at 23,657.99.

The Dow opened 90.48 points lower on Monday, almost reversing gains recorded in the previous session as the delayed release of September's core personal consumption expenditures index buoyed sentiment on after coming in softer than expected, helping major indices log a second positive week in a row.

September's PCE reading also marked one of the last major data points scheduled for release before the FOMC meeting. Investor sentiment has improved in recent weeks, with traders now pricing-in an approximately 90% chance that the central bank votes to cut interest rates at its final gathering of 2025, according to CME's FedWatch tool, up from less than 67% a month ago.

While there were no corporate earnings slated for release on Monday, Oracle shares rose in early trading as investors looked ahead to the group's quarterly results on Wednesday, while Confluent shares shot up almost 30% after IBM announced its intention to acquire the company in an $11bn deal, expected to close by mid‑2026, and Broadcom shares were in the green following a report from The Information revealed Microsoft was mulling over the idea of collaborating on custom chips with the firm.

No data points were set for publication on Monday.
