American Airlines unveils premium upgrades in competitive drive

(Sharecast News) - American Airlines announced a "sweeping transformation" on Tuesday, unveiling fleetwide upgrades across its narrowbody planes to improve entertainment options and its premium cabin experience. Chief customer officer Heather Garboden called it "one of the most significant investments in the onboard experience in our history", as the airline announced plans to retrofit its Airbus A319 and A320 fleets to add an additional row of First Class.

The number of Main Cabin Extra seats would also be increased across the majority of its narrowbody planes, providing extra legroom and overhead locker space.

Premium seating would expand to 40% of seats on narrowbody departures "in the coming years", up from 25% currently.

The carrier, which continues to trail behind rivals Delta and United in profitability, said it was also restoring seatback entertainment screens on narrowbody jets to entice fliers.

"From next-generation seatback entertainment at every seat to substantially more premium seating options, these enhancements will give our customers more ways to relax, stay connected and enjoy their journey," Garboden said.

American Airlines stock was down 1.6% at $14.20 by 1639 BST.
