FTSE 250 movers: easyJet tanks; Greencore surges

Pub chain JD Wetherspoon tumbled after it warned annual profits were likely to be below market expectations, with marginally lower sales than anticipated in the final quarter, combined with higher food, labour, repairs, energy and business rate costs.

In an unusually brief trading update, the company said like-for-like sales increased 4% in the 12 weeks to 19 July, compared to the same period last year. Year-to-date like-for-like sales increased by 4.2%. By midday the stock was leading the fallers board, having lost 8%.

EasyJet tanked on Wednesday following a report the European Union is preparing a review of airline ownership rules to prevent foreign investors from gaining effective control of carriers - a move that could threaten US bids for the budget airline.

Convenience foods manufacturer Greencore surged as it said full-year adjusted operating profit would be above market expectations.

Hochschild Mining rose after its latest production report. Updating on second-quarter trading, the South America-focused miner said attributable gold equivalent production was 76,231 oz in the three months to 30 June, while silver equivalent production was 5.87m oz.

That compares to gold and silver production of 83,530 oz and 6.43m oz respectively in the same period a year earlier.
