US sends top military officials to Ukraine to revive Russia peace talks

(Sharecast News) - The White House has sent senior Pentagon officials to Kyiv in an attempt to restart talks aimed at bringing an end to the Russia's three-and-a-half-year war with Ukraine. According to POLITICO, Army secretary Dan Driscoll, two four-star generals and other senior military leaders have been despatched to the Ukrainian capital to meet with the country's president Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

The Ukraine visit - the first by high-ranking US officials to Ukraine since February - is set to focus on reviving negotiations regarding a peace deal, though it is unclear whether Driscoll was sent to present a new proposal to Zelenskiy.

Driscoll will then be sent to Moscow to meet with Russian officials at a later date, according to media reports.

"The president [Donald Trump] has been clear that it is time to stop the killing and make a deal to end the war," a White House official said.

The meetings come ahead of the Zelenskiy's planned trip to Turkey to talk with president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

"We are preparing to reinvigorate negotiations, and we have developed solutions that we will propose to our partners. Doing everything possible to bring the end of the war closer is Ukraine's top priority," Zelenskiy said of his Turkish trip.
