The Candlelighters Cottage

Last year Candlelighters was the Leeds office chosen charity of the year. Around 150 staff based at the office at Bond Court in the city’s financial quarter raised £10,009 to help Candlelighters support the region’s children and their families who have been affected by cancer. The fundraising included everything from office fun days, bake sales and sweepstakes to a sponsored head shave and group outdoor challenges.
Candlelighters’ work is carried out in various ways, including at the Children’s Hospital at Leeds General Infirmary, as well as The Square in the centre of Leeds. There is also The Bus, which carries this support out into the community. The charity also funds holidays for families with children being treated for cancer, in addition to family events throughout the year.
Almost 10 months on from the fundraising, staff took the opportunity to see how the money raised has helped the charity and visited Candlelighters Cottage, a new-home-from-home accommodation to be provided for families with a child being treated for cancer at Leeds Children’s Hospital.
Fiona Lumb, Marketing and Communications Manager and Brogan Hirst, Marketing Executive received a tour around the Cottage last week. Fiona said: “We had the opportunity to see the outcome of some of the charity’s funds and efforts. A parent may either be away from the child with cancer or away from their siblings for extended periods of time and Candlelighters has worked to help more families be together, at what is a very upsetting and distressing time. What’s more, the charity has put in a high level of consideration and detail into making the house work for all those who need it. It was great to see what our fundraising efforts have gone towards.”
