Pound plunges after Queen asked to suspend Parliament ahead of Brexit

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed the Government will ask the Queen to suspend Parliament ahead of a new Queen’s Speech, scheduled for 14th October. This will give MPs just days to stop a no-deal Brexit, infuriating Tory rebels and opposition parties.

Saul Fulda, Investment Analyst at investment management and stockbroking firm Redmayne Bentley, said: “The news triggered a sharp plunge in Sterling, dropping as much as 1% against the dollar and euro to $1.2165 and €1.0971 respectively, while the FTSE 100, buoyed by any weakness in the Pound, edged slightly higher. The announcement also increases the likelihood of a no-deal Brexit, together with a general election after October 31st.”
