Investing in a successful career

The exams are over, the degree has been awarded, and you’ve flung your mortar board skyward for the obligatory ‘just-graduated’ picture.

But is a degree alone enough to prepare you for the career you want?

For those wanting a fast-paced career with exciting opportunities for progression, investment management and stockbroking can appeal for all kinds of reasons – it is shaped by economic and political events, requiring strong communication and analytical skills to help investors chart the ups and downs of the stock market and make the most of their money.

Stephanie Brockbank, Placement Liaison Officer at Leeds Beckett University, said: “It’s a tough, tough, tough world out there, and the climate for graduates is becoming increasingly competitive, but if you want something badly enough, I truly believe you can get it.”

Stephanie is part of a team at Leeds Beckett University coordinating work placements for students, offering the opportunity to spend a year at an organisation in their chosen field whilst working towards their degree. Often taking on various roles within an organisation, they work closely with professionals to develop new skills. Stephanie said: “Our record is strong at Leeds Beckett, with 96.9% of all of our UK graduates finding work or in further study within six months of graduating. A placement is a great way to test out a career – it’s like a year-long interview where a student will find out if this is the industry for them.”

Investment management and stockbroking firm Redmayne Bentley has been offering students a first step into the world of investment management and stockbroking for more than 20 years.

Leeds Beckett was the first university to form a partnership with the firm to offer the programme, coordinated by Payroll and Benefits Manager Debbie Thomas and Training Manager Judith Ullock. However, due to the number of enquiries received from students from other establishments, the programme was later opened to other universities.

Judith said: “With us offering both front and back office work, it gives the student a good insight into the type of career they could have.”
The firm’s Corporate Actions Manager, Neil Talbot, is among those who began his career with the firm on a placement, having been introduced to the company when he was studying International Business Studies at Sheffield Hallam University.
He said: “I worked on several teams across the business including the Investment Management Team, ISAs, Nominees, Corporate Actions, Data Management and the Dealing Room.”
Neil decided to contact Redmayne Bentley again after graduating. He said: “As luck had it, someone had left Corporate Actions the week before and there was an opening. Now I’ve been here almost 10 years!”
Rachel Scarf was between the second and third year of her Accounting and Finance degree at Leeds Beckett University when she began her placement. She said: “I worked within two departments during my placement year: ISAs and Investment Services.

“Once my placement year ended, I was asked if I would like to stay on and work part-time in the Investment Services department whilst I completed the final year of my degree, so I never left. I couldn’t have imagined working anywhere else.”

Many others who came to Redmayne Bentley on a placement have gone on to hold senior positions in the firm. They include Director of Stockbroking Phil Armitage, Dealing Manager Colin Adshead and Marketing and Communications Manager Fiona Lumb.
Lucy Greenbank works alongside Rachel as a Compliance Officer, and Investment Executive Nick Thompson is based in the Leeds Investment Services team. Others have gone on to work in the firm’s other offices, such as Investment Manager Onochie Eneh, based in the firm’s Locksbottom office in Kent, and London-based Dealing Manager Glen Cummins. 
There are also clear benefits for the firm, as Judith said working in partnership with universities is a guaranteed way to raise its profile within the higher education sector. 

She added that it helps ensure Redmayne Bentley has access to talented individuals with the skills they need to make a successful contribution to the company’s objectives. She said: “It supports the firm’s ongoing commitment to providing individuals with relevant training and development.
“If the students have a good year with us then there is an opportunity for them to return to the firm, which helps with recruitment.”
And having highly-trained people with a full awareness of financial market regulations, in addition to the right skills and knowledge around providing the best service for every individual, means clients also benefit.
Rachel remains with the firm as a Trainee Compliance Officer. She said: “It was a really good experience which I would recommend to any student looking to broaden their knowledge and professional experience during their academic studies.”
Neil agrees. “I would certainly recommend it as you get a great insight into financial markets and pick up valuable life experience and general office skills to boot. I always try and make sure any students on my team are well looked after as I was once in their shoes!”
