The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling, has confirmed today that this year’s budget will take place on Wednesday 24th March.

The Budget will fall six weeks ahead of the widely expected general election date of 6th May and although it will be an opportunity to set out Labour's post-election plans it is unlikely to go as far as detailing how they propose to reduce the UK's deficit by one half over the next Parliament and how they will achieve a cut in public borrowing which is predicted to peak at £178bn in 2010.
